Application guidelines

Surface preparation

Prior to the application of HYCHEM WE70, the substrate must be thoroughly prepared.

  • Substrates shall be firm, clean and dry with a compressive strength of 25 MPa and a surface tensile strength of 1.5 MPa minimum.
  • Remove contaminants, curing compounds and all weak and loose materials.
  • Mechanically abrade substrate as required.
Pre-conditioning product

It is important to note that even when the application environment is warm, products which have been stored in cold or cooler conditions should be pre-conditioned, ideally to 20-25°C, to ease mixing and application and help avoid other potential issues such as amine bloom or blushing. Applying a cold product in a warm environment is not recommended.

Mixing (carpark sealer)

Correct mixing procedure is critical. Do not mix resin, hardener and water at the same time.

  • Empty contents of Component A (Base Resin) into Component B (Hardener).
  • Mix with a double helix mixer at a speed of 500 rpm to avoid incorporating excessive air into the mix.
  • Mix for 2 minutes, scrape down the sides of the mixing container and mix for another minute to ensure the mix is homogeneous.

First coat dilution: dilute 1:1 with water by volume. While the mixer is running, add 1/3 water to the mixed resin and hardener. Mix until homogenous. Repeat dilution process in equal increments and duration e.g. 9L WE70 requires dilution of 3L + 3L + 3L water.

Second coat dilution: dilute 3:2 with water by volume. While the mixer is running, add 1/2 water to the mixed resin and hardener. Mix until homogenous. Repeat dilution process in equal increments and duration e.g. 9L WE70 requires dilution of 3L + 3L water.

Application (carpark sealer)

Apply by brush and roller at 10 – 12 m²/L

Environmental conditions

Temperature and the surrounding atmospheric conditions will play a part in the curing process of all resin products. Under conditions of low temperatures and high humidity the final cured surface finish can be adversely affected, potentially resulting in poor gloss retention, discoloration over time, poor overcoat ability and inter-coat adhesion. Quite often these conditions will result in the formation of a white film over the surface, often evident after contact with water. If this occurs, the existing coating will need to be abraded to completely remove the affected surface to ensure the adhesion of subsequent applications. In some cases, partial or complete re-priming may be necessary. Attention also needs to be paid to the substrate temperature, which should be at least 3-5 °C above the dew point during the curing phase. Industry standards recommend the accurate recording of environmental conditions such as substrate and air temperatures, humidity levels and dew point readings during both the application and curing processes. Full material warranties cannot be provided unless all the relevant data has been recorded accurately. If in doubt consult the HYCHEM technical department for advice.

Safety precautions

Wear gloves, eye protection and overalls during mixing and application. Ensure there is adequate ventilation and avoid breathing the vapour.

Shelf life

12 months from date of manufacture when stored under shelter at 25°C and in the original un-opened container.

Storage conditions

The packaging must be stored properly in original, unopened and undamaged sealed packaging, in dry conditions at temperatures between 5°C and 30°C.

Colour

HYCHEM WE70 is supplied clear.

Important considerations
  • Coatings and overlays containing water must not be applied directly to HYCHEM WE70 resin unless a sufficiently porous mortar has been installed or it has been fully broadcast with dry aggregate e.g. quartz or silica sand.
  • Ensure consumption of material is uniform to achieve proper appearance, texture and consistent performance.
  • Ensure the material is mixed and stirred properly. Incorrect mixing can lead to performance issues.
  • If heating is required do not use gas, oil, paraffin or other fossil-fuel heaters. Use only electric-powered warm-air blower systems.
  • At low temperatures and low humidities (< 40% relative humidity), curing and recoat times will be affected.

Questions about Hychem WE70

Does WE70 count towards Green Star?

Yes. WE70 is compliant with the Green Star Interiors VOC limits (12.1.B and 13.1.B) and is emission-tested to CA 01350. Ask us for the certificate for your submission.

Can it go on damp or green concrete?

Yes. WE70 bonds well to green concrete and damp substrates, and can be used at up to 85 % relative humidity where there is good air exchange.

Can WE70 seal a car park?

Yes — clear car park sealing is one of its listed uses. It cures down to 5 °C and has almost no odour, so decks in use can be sealed with little disruption.

Where is Hychem WE70 used?
